Pedigrees and health results

Now 1655 dogs

Welcome to the Database

The Nihon Ken (the Japanese Dog) are the 6 aboriginal Japanese breeds designated in Japan as 天然記念物 or Natural Monuments. This includes the Akita, Kishu, Shikoku, Kai, Hokkaido, and Shiba. As the populations for many of these breeds decrease every year it is becoming increasingly critical to collect as much data as possible about the remaining breeding stock. This data will hopefully help the guardians of the breed to make the best possible plans for breeding and preservation.

The most important part of this database is the health test results collected from breeders, clubs and databases from various countries, and the database's ability to calculate inbreeding coefficients (COI) and AVK. It is also possible to see the COI/AVK of a planned litters, to check health-results of listed dogs or just to browse through multi-generational pedigrees.

There is still limited data available regarding genetic health issues in the Japanese breeds. As with all dogs, the Nihon Ken have been diagnosed with hereditary and non-hereditary health issues. As guardians of the breeds, their health is paramount, so tracking and removing the hereditary issues is an important focus. Some conditions that have been seen in the Nihon Ken are panosteitis, other joint related issues, hip dysplasia, possible IMPA, sebacious adenitis, VKH, split or abnormal heats, allergies, epilepsy, entropion, luxating patella, male infertility, pyometra, hypodontia, and cryptorchidism to name a few. Each breed seems to have it's own batch of health issues that affect it, so in the future we will sort out a list of what we are trying to track and focus on in each breed.

Due to issues with incorrect data entry due to user error or incorrect translation of pedigrees, at the moment all entries are being made by the administrators of this database. If you have any questions regarding this or other issues, feel free to contact us via the contact tab at the top of the site. Many of the pedigrees will be entered in Japanese, some in English, and some bilingual. The best way to search for individual dogs will be by using registration numbers. If you are looking for a user generated (and more user oriented) pedigree database for a simple google search should bring up databases for the Akita, Shiba, Hokkaido, and Shikoku.

If you would like specific pedigrees entered into the database, would like to make corrections to listed data, or need to get ahold of the administrator of the site, the administrator of this site, Shigeru Kato, can be reached at kato.the.walrus@gmail.com
